National Domestic Violence Hotline – 1.800.799.SAFE (7233)

When I see the color purple, I immediately think of royalty. It also can create a feeling of balance as well for me. The Sensational Color Company also believes that “purple fosters creativity by awakening our senses while promoting the quiet necessary to make intuitive, insightful observations.”

Purple is then the perfect color to honor Domestic Violence Awareness Day. This day takes place on the Thursday of the third full week of October. In wearing purple today, you are raising awareness of domestic violence for adults and teens.

For many, many years, I did not talk about my encounters with domestic violence. Sadly, I am a factor in the statistics below. I have been stalked and have experienced domestic violence by someone I knew.

Did you know?

The Women In Destress organization reminds us that “1 in 3 women will experience domestic violence in their lifetime.”

The National Coalition Against Domestic Violence shared that “31% of Alabama women and 26.9% of Alabama men experience intimate partner physical violence, intimate partner sexual violence and/or intimate partner stalking.”

Alabama Public Health provided more context to the statistic, stating that “according to the latest data reported by the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency's (ALEA) Crime in Alabama, 1,890 rapes were reported to law enforcement. Seventy-nine percent of these rapes were committed by someone the victims knew. Nearly 23% of these victims were between the ages of 13 and 16.”

These stats are shocking and horrible. Let's help raise awareness today by wearing purple. Also, the entire month of October is dedicated to the awareness of Domestic Violence. What can you do to raise awareness? Get educated. Here are some great resources to help you out:
