The holiday season is officially underway, with Christmas just around the corner. After an unseasonably warm fall, temperatures transitioned into some of the season's coldest weather.

Despite the Southern state's reputation for mild winters, many Alabamians are hoping for a rare snowfall on December 25.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's National Climatic Data Center (NCDC) said the "probability of a white Christmas based on data from the 1981-2010 three-decade averages. A white Christmas is defined as having 1 inch or more of snow on the ground Christmas morning."

The 2025 Old Farmer's Almanac predicts that a majority of the United States can expect a winter that is "a milder, gentler winter than average."

Old Farmer's Almanac Prediction of Areas That Have a Chance of a White Christmas

New England: There is a chance of a white Christmas in Northern Maine but nowhere else in the region.

High Plains: The northern part of the region may experience a white Christmas. The southern piece, mainly south of I-70, will see a white Christmas.

Intermountain: There is a chance of a white Christmas, especially in the Rockies. However, the northern part of Arizona will not have a white Christmas.
