The Yellowhammer State has experienced an extremely hot summer and a pretty warm start to the Fall season, so the prospect of cooler temperatures is always a welcome relief. While winter officially starts on December 21st, meteorologically it begins on December 1st.

The 2023 – 2024 Winter predictions from the Old Farmer’s Almanac said we should prepare for a Winter Wonderland for most of the United States. Snowfall will be above normal for many states.

Does that include Alabama?

What is Driving the Upcoming Winter Season?

The anticipated El Niño, a warm Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO), cool Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO), and equatorial stratospheric winds have an impact on the winter weather.

Let’s get back to the possibility of snow.

The Old Farmer’s Almanac has pointed to areas that are prone to snow to be prepared for that influx for the Northeast and Midwest regions. Snowfall is expected to commence in November and persist through the beginning of spring, with a series of storms, showers, and flurries.

That somewhat leaves Alabama out of having a winter wonderland but Northern Alabama could see some snow impacts.

Weather Tip: Forecasting winter weather in the Deep South can be tricky. Simply put we don’t get snow or freezing temperatures as often as other states.
