February typically experiences the fewest tornadoes on average.

But can tornadoes happen in February?

The short answer is yes, and it is more common in the southern region.

“The elevated southern risk is because of its proximity to the Gulf of Mexico, where warm, moist air can surge northward faster, adding instability to the atmosphere,” said The Weather Channel.

However, in February 2024, most tornadoes happened in the Midwest rather than the South. The Weather Channel said, “Most bizarre of all, Wisconsin had its first February tornado in records dating to before statehood on Feb. 8, 2024.”

As the risk of severe weather increases in certain months in Alabama, it is always best to be prepared and aware of your emergency plan. Severe weather can happen in any month; it’s just that some months have a more heightened potential.

It’s always best to get ready when the sun is shining and there is no weather threat.

Ask yourself these questions:

  • Do you know your safe place? (At home, with friends, work, school, driving, etc.)
  • What county do you live in? (Also, know the sections of the county, like northwest, etc.)
  • What county surrounds you? (So, when an alert goes for that county, you can have a heads-up)
  • How do you receive weather information?
