In 2011, I worked for Cox Media Group with 95.7 JAMZ. I was nearing the end of my meteorology studies at Mississippi State University. I remember that day so vividly.
After reviewing the weather briefing, I felt uneasy. I packed a bag of clothes and necessities, knowing deep down that it would be a long day of covering the storms that were about to unfold.
I went to duty as co-anchor of nonstop weather coverage with my mentor, J.B. Elliott. I don’t know how many hours we were in the air, but two moments stand out.
I saw the rain-wrapped tornado from our studio. It was massive.
The hearts of Alabamians.
Once the tornado threat moved past our area, we shifted immediately into recovery mode. For several days, we didn’t play a single song. Calls poured in from listeners trapped in their homes, pleading for help. Other listeners were ready with chainsaws and equipment to free those in need. The community came together in an extraordinary show of courage and kindness.
When I think back to April 27, 2011, I am overwhelmed by the enduring strength of Alabamians and the deep pain carried by those who suffered unimaginable loss.
