Alabama Law Could Put Grocery Shoppers In Jail
What?
That can not be right. A new Alabama law could put us normal, everyday grocery shoppers in an Alabama jail cell.
Like behind bars jail cell? What is going on here?
This is someone's idea of a bad joke. It has to be.
No, it's not a joke. It is 100% true.
Let me explain.
Friday night, I am in my local Northport Publix store.
I'm at the self-checkout and I am distracted.
It's been a long week and I'm tired. I have someone on the phone as well during my self-checkout experience.
That's when it happened. A Publix worker comes flying out of nowhere raising a fuss over something I did.
WHAT? I was rattled. She was screaming something about stealing cottage cheese...and it finally hit me.
I love these little cottage cheese cups and they are small. Again, I was distracted and tired and didn't realize that I hadn't properly SCAN my cottage cheese cups!
I realize it was completely my fault, but who among us hasn't ever had a moment of distraction?
Well, just shoot me. The death penalty is the only appropriate response to my sins.
I'm betting that I am not the only person that has screwed up at the self-checkout. I mean, we are just doing the job of the grocery store worker and handling cashier duties.
We should not have to do other people's jobs. We are definitely doing other people's jobs.
NOW, SCREWING UP AT SELF-CHECKOUT IS A FELONY
In Alabama, a new bill (HB288) could make it easy to charge you and me with a Class B Felony. The bill is titled “The Retail Crime Prevention Act,” and it could get little old ladies a jail cell.
This is ridiculous. If you don't believe me, read more about it HERE.
It is supposedly targeted towards these groups of thieves that are organized in various Alabama cities.
However, it puts many of us at risk for a cup of cottage cheese or a candy bar.
I don't want to see my grandmother locked up because she didn't scan her tapioca pudding. I'm betting you don't either
