Alabama Temperatures on the Rise: Concerning Heat Index Values
The meteorological summer started on June 1, and we are several days away from the astronomical summer start on June 20. Regardless of what summer start date you follow, temperatures are on the rise this week.
“Heat indices in the upper 90s to around 100° return over the weekend,” said the National Weather Service in Birmingham.
This means a moderate heat risk across the Yellowhammer State, which means a heat safety concern for Alabamians. The National Weather Service in Birmingham said, “This level of heat affects most individuals sensitive to heat, especially those without effective cooling and/or adequate hydration.”

Summer has just gotten started, and we have several months to go. During these high heat index values, concerns arise regarding heat stress and heat-related illnesses. Do not forget that pets and animals are at risk too.
Why are Heat Index Values and Rising Temps a Concern?
Heat index values are a measure of how it really feels when the relative humidity is combined with air temperatures. I look at heat index values as the higher the value, the greater the risk for the following concerns:
Heat Stroke
Heat Exhaustion
Reduced Body Cooling
Dehydration
