Alabama Experiences Warming Trend, Anticipates Heavy Rainfall

Portions of Alabama can expect showers and thunderstorms to arrive on Wednesday afternoon and continue until Thursday evening. This system could bring locally heavy rainfall to some areas as there is the potential for some slow-moving or training thunderstorms.

James Spann, ABC 33/40, and Townsquare Media Tuscaloosa Chief Meteorologist, said that a “few strong thunderstorms will be possible across far South Alabama tomorrow and Thursday... heavier storms there could produce strong gusty winds. Extreme South Alabama is in a "marginal risk" (level 1/5) of severe thunderstorms Thursday.”

Currently, “2 to 4 inches of rainfall is forecast across the watch area, with locally higher amounts,” according to the National Weather Service in Birmingham.

Flood Watch Details

The National Weather Service has issued a “Flood Watch” for portions of Alabama. This will go into effect Wednesday, January 24 at Noon. This watch will last until Friday, January 26, at Midnight.

Possible Impacts

“Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations. Flooding may occur in poor drainage and urban areas,” said the National Weather Service in Birmingham.
