Good morning West Alabama! It is Tuesday, October 22, 2024.

Tuesday Morning Observations:

Breast Cancer Awareness Month is ongoing, and it is an important month to say the least. Early detection can make all the difference in the world in mitigating the effects of breast cancer but unfortunately, all too many women don't take the time and that can be life-threatening.

When my wife Nancy and I were engaged we went through a frightening time where there was a diagnosis of breast cancer. Further examinations proved it was not cancer, but had she not had the mammogram it could have become cancer, and she would have never known it until it was too late.

There are important facts of which to be aware:

  • 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime?
  • Breast cancer is the most common cancer in American women, except for skin cancers.
  • On average, every 2 minutes a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer in the United States.
  • Breast cancer is a disease in which malignant (cancer) cells form in the tissues of the breast.
  • There are many different types of breast cancer that can affect both women and men.
  • The early detection of breast cancer through annual mammography and other breast exams is the best defense against receiving a late-stage breast cancer diagnosis.
  • There are currently over 4 million breast cancer survivors in the United States.
  • An estimated 42,250 U.S. women will die from breast cancer this year.
  • The 5-year relative survival rate for cancer diagnosed at the localized stage is 99%.
  • Tuscaloosa County has a high breast cancer rate than the state average.
  • Cancer is diagnosed at a lower rate in black women because fewer seek advanced diagnosis.

Just reading the above bullet points should be enough for you or for you to encourage a loved one to seek regular checkups in order to reduce the chance of breast cancer.

Topping the News:

The Northport City Council heard a first reading of a resolution for the creation of the University Beach Capital Improvement Cooperative District at last night’s meeting. It was explained by Ron Davis that the district only applies to the 80 acres that will encompass the controversial University Beach Resort, not adjacent property.

A public hearing has been set for November 4th, when a final vote is also expected.

The Tuscaloosa City Council will take up unfinished business tonight concerning the plan for a Sports Illustrated Resort on Rice Mine Road. A large crowd of people opposed to the project last week and forced the council to table a resolution that would allow the multi-million-dollar hotel, condo, timeshare, retail project to move forward.

Mayor Maddox does not have a vote, but he told 95-3 The Bear he has serious questions about the height of the structures and the controversial timeshare units to be included.
