Florida seems to get all the credit for lots of strange, crazy news. We say WTF…What the Florida.

Well, being born and raised in sweet home Alabama, I know we have our own share of oddities. I’ve documented a few for your reading pleasure.

Here are a few genuinely odd Alabama stories:

In 1954, near Sylacauga, a woman was napping on her couch when a meteorite crashed through the roof and struck her. She’s believed to be the only documented person hit by a meteorite.

Another is “five Civil War cannonballs found in a suitcase at an airport”.

There’s also a dinosaur egg, apparently the only one found east of the Mississippi.

Plus, Alabama’s state fossil is a massive prehistoric whale. And you thought it was the governor.
We also have an ancient meteor crater near Wetumpka.

More recently, researchers discovered a roughly 65-million-year-old crab in central Alabama and named it Costacopluma nicksabani, after Nick Saban. That’s my favorite so far.

So take that, Florida! Alabama has its share of oddities, crazies, and stranger things.
