UA’s Moundville Archaeological Park Announces Spring 2021 Events

The University of Alabama's Moundville Archaeological Park has released the schedule for its upcoming spring events, which have been adapted to follow COVID-19 safety guidelines. The park will host the virtual Ancient Art and Technology Weekend March 26-27, and its annual Birdfest event April 9-10.

This year, the Moundville Archeological park and museum has included many virtual components into their spring event planning.

According to Rebecca Johnson, UA Museums communications specialist, the decision to include more virtual components was made to hopefully bring more engagement to the museum and park.

"The virtual components are related to COVID-19 safety guidelines, but Moundville Archaeological Park is also aiming to have an online component for events moving forward to reach a broader audience," Johnson said in a press release.

The Ancient Art and Technology Weekend will feature crafts, lectures, stories and more on the Moundville Archaeological Park Facebook page and UA Museums YouTube page. Activity packets for this event are currently available at the Jones Archaeological Museum located in the Park.

The 2021 Birdfest will include both virtual and in-person segments. This year's event will feature an in-person bird walk with one of the park's newest volunteers, Dwight Lammon. The bird walk will include information on wildlife conservation, bird watching checklists, birdhouse plans and more.

Bird walk events will take place at 9 a.m. each day followed by a craft activity or lecture on the UA Museums YouTube page at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Activity packets for this event will also be available at the Museum located in the park.

Birdfest is an annual event hosted by the Moundville Archaeological Park. The event allows guests to learn about birding and the great history it has in the Native American community.

“We are so happy that the Alabama Audubon will be with us to talk about birding in the Black Belt this year,” said Lindsey Gordon, education and outreach coordinator with Moundville Archaeological Park, in the release. “We are also thrilled to have the continued support of the West Alabama Birding Trail Committee and Alabama Wildlife Center, which are doing very vital work to conserve Alabama’s wildlife.”

According to UA's Moundville Archeological Park's website, there is no extra cost for the Birdfest once admission to enter the park is paid.

Though registration is limited, guests can register for the bird walk event online here. Registration for this event is required and guests must comply with all social distance guidelines and regulations.
