Led by William Hawkins, Executive Director of Historic Tuscaloosa, the tours will guide attendees through more than 200 years of Tuscaloosa's storied past — from its time as Alabama's state capital to its vibrant cultural and architectural evolution.

“The Downtown walking tour will be an informative, fun and entertaining experience,” said Hawkins. “We will cover as much of Tuscaloosa's 200-year history as possible and dive into some of the more captivating stories from our shared past. Come learn something new and walk away with a better understanding of Tuscaloosa's glorious history.”

Visit Tuscaloosa is proud to help history come alive each Saturday in April in downtown Tuscaloosa as it proudly joins the Alabama Tourism Department’s statewide history-focused walking tour initiative. Visit Tuscaloosa and Historic Tuscaloosa have partnered to introduce Historic Tuscaloosa Downtown Walking Tours, offering an engaging and educational way to explore the city's rich heritage.

The walking tours will take place every Saturday in April beginning at 10:00 a.m. at the Jemison-Van de Graaff Mansion and lasting approximately 90 minutes. Each tour is limited to 20 participants to ensure an intimate and interactive experience. While the tours are free, donations to Historic Tuscaloosa are encouraged to support the preservation of the city's historic landmarks.

Visit Tuscaloosa president and CEO Kelsey Rush emphasized the importance of collaboration in promoting the city’s historical narrative.

“Fostering community partnerships like this not only engages visitors and residents but also strengthens the connection to Tuscaloosa’s many history-defining chapters. We’re thrilled to work alongside Historic Tuscaloosa to share these stories,” she said.

Registration for the tours is required due to limited space. To reserve a spot, contact Historic Tuscaloosa at (205) 758-2238 or via email at info@historictuscaloosa.org. For more information, people may also contact Visit Tuscaloosa at (205) 391-9200 or at info@visittuscaloosa.com.

All are invited to step into history with the newly created Historic Downtown Walking Tours this April — where every street corner has a story to tell.
