A report from the Center for American Progress indicates that much of Tuscaloosa County and West Alabama are "childcare deserts," where the demand for childcare greatly surpasses the available supply. This issue is particularly severe for families needing care beyond the conventional 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. hours, a common requirement for workers in manufacturing and healthcare sectors.

“The childcare shortage is not merely a family problem—it’s an economic challenge,” highlighted Dr. Jonathon Koh, President of Shelton State Community College. “Shelton State is proud to support the 3by3 initiative as it creates legitimate pathways into careers that strengthen our communities.”

West Alabama’s workforce and education leaders are collaborating to address a significant local need: access to quality childcare for parents working non-traditional hours in manufacturing and related fields. The Community Childcare Cultivator (3by3) program has announced its Summer Evening Cohort orientation dates for Wednesday, May 14, and Thursday, May 15, both from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at The Synergic Center in Northport.

The 3by3 program is free for participants, made possible through local partnerships and grant funding. Various organizations are combining resources to cover the costs associated with training, supplies, and materials. Participants must complete an eligibility screening during orientation, and those previously deemed ineligible may qualify under newly established funding criteria. Attendance at one of the orientation sessions is mandatory for all prospective participants, regardless of previous participation.

Participants are encouraged to register in advance at 3by3childcare.com and should bring the following documentation to orientation:

  • Photo ID
  • Social Security card
  • Three recent pay stubs
  • Unemployment verification letter, if applicable
  • Benefit documentation (SNAP, TANF, WIC, etc.)
  • Family demographics

The Synergic Center is located at 3500 5th St., Northport, Alabama. For driving directions, please visit https://bit.ly/3by3directions.
