The Colors Of The Sky

As far back as I can remember, I have always been fascinated with the weather and everything associated with it.  The sky is magical to me; every day, we have a sunrise and a sunset that can be filled with some of the most jaw-dropping colors.  Just the other day, the sunset in West Alabama was filled with pinks, oranges, and red.  One day last week, the sky had such a beautiful blue hue, that I couldn’t get enough of looking at it.  I wanted to share what creates those colors.  According to Science Daily, “Molecules and small particles in the atmosphere change the direction of light rays, causing them to scatter.  Scattering affects the color of light coming from the sky, but the details are determined by the wavelength of the light and the size of the particle.”

I do know from the meteorology and atmosphere studies that at sunrise and sunset, the sun is positioned low in the sky.  This means that the sunlight travels through a much more exceptional thickness of the atmosphere as opposed to the afternoon light.  At times the sky can have an eerie feel to it.  In cases where the sky is green, this indicates a storm with heavy rain and hail, which can scatter green and also red and purple.  Gray skies can indicate developing thunderstorms.  Also, the lack of sunlight produces darkness, and the color black.  Regardless of the science behind the colors of the sky, it is very fascinating.  Here is a collection of some memorable skies.  Enjoy.
