Although Bangor Cave may spook you now, it was once very inviting during Prohibition times. Sporting a hidden bar and bandstand, this underground den used to entertain some of the South's finest back when drinking was illegal.

At the time, the surrounding area of Blount Springs hosted a popular resort that was known to have mystical healing powers. This mini paradise brought about many of the speakeasy's customers which offered a second-floor ladies lounge and a heavily guarded casino room complete with slot machines and card tables.

Gov. Bibb Graves did everything in his power to shut the club down. There were constant raids and news stories about the illicit activities that occurred here. This year-and-a-half war brought about it's eventual closure in January 1939 when a fired broke out and caused extensive damage.

Although Bangor Cave is not open to the public, Birmingham natives are fighting for its preservation as a historic site.
