Rankings For Alabama Children Are Out

Alabama’s child well being ranking and our low school system/education rankings are embarrassing and unacceptable.
These disturbing results should put the well-being of Alabama children as a major issue in the upcoming gubernatorial election.
Kids Count Data Book is out. The book rates “the well being of children” in 50 states.
So how are these rankings determined? The rankings are determined based on 4 categories:
Economic Well Being
Education
Health
Family and Community
The report is not good for Alabama. In fact, the report is horrible. Alabama ranks near the bottom.
We ranked #43 for child well being. Dropping 4 spots from a year ago. Approximately 235,000 children live in poverty. Just 18% of 8th grade students scored satisfactory in mathematics. Alabama rated 48th in low birth weight babies. Alabama has a high rate of kids that are without health care insurance.
