One of the biggest moments in Alabama's loss to Tennessee came with 4:08 left in the game when Tennessee quarterback Hendon Hooker's pass to tight end Princeton Fant was picked off by Alabama defensive back Kool-Aid McKinstry.

The referees threw a controversial defensive pass interference flag (DPI) on Alabama defensive back Malachi Moore during the interception which gave the Volunteers life again. Tennessee ended up scoring on that drive to make it a 49-49 ballgame. The DPI proved to be fatal for the Tide, as the team lost the game on a 40-yard field goal as time expired.

The call caused an uproar among Alabama fans all across social media due to the late nature of the call and its mildness.

Nick Saban had this to say about the call:

"I can't really comment on it. It's hard to see when it's down on the corner. I thought the guy made a good swat on the ball and we intercepted a tipped ball. We had another one on 3rd&6, guy had good coverage on the guy. I think pass interference is one of the most controversial calls in college football right now. And, you know, I've talked about it before but, just inconsistency in how it gets called, not just on those calls but on all calls. And, you know, the officials do the best they can and I'm not making any negative comments on what they called," said Saban.

Penalties were an issue all night for the Tide, receiving a ludicrous 17 penalties for 130 yards, which broke the record for the most penalties in a game in program history.

Penalties have been an issue for the Tide all year. According to the NCAA website, the Crimson Tide has recorded 49 penalties in six games and averages 8.17 penalties per game, excluding the record-breaking penalties on Saturday.

The Alabama Crimson Tide takes on the Mississippi State Bulldogs on Saturday, October 22, 2022, at 6 p.m. CT. Coverage will be on Tide 100.9 and 95.3 The Bear.
