If you've driven down  21st Street in Tuscaloosa near Foster's Ferry Road, you've noticed some new construction happening at the New Heights community resource center. The West End is getting a new basketball court.

According to a press release from the West Alabama Chamber of Commerce, the Leadership Tuscaloosa 2024-25 class will present their completed class project to the West Tuscaloosa community in August. New Hoops 4 New Heights is the class project that consists of a new basketball court and pavilion at the New Heights Community and Resource Center.

“This project is about more than building a basketball court and pavilion — it’s about creating a lasting place for youth and families to gather, connect and grow,” said Karen Burklew, according to the press release. Burklew is the project spokesperson and a graduate of the Leadership Tuscaloosa 2024-25 class.

“We’re thrilled to see it come to life and to celebrate with the people who made it possible.”

The ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. at the center, where the new recreational space will be officially presented to the community, and guests will enjoy light refreshments and photo opportunities. The press release also states that donors, class members, community partners, and elected officials who made the project possible will all be recognized.

West Alabama has a one-of-a-kind facility in the New Heights Community Resource Center.

The center brings together multiple organizations under one roof to provide wraparound services in education, homelessness prevention, youth programming, mental health, and health care.
