Just Poppin’ Off: You’re Gonna Do What to Me at the Airport?

So, before I pop off on the subject of this new possible airline requirement, I will admit that how I feel about being fluffy might not be a shared view by others. I get that.

But, why don’t I pop off anyway??

Now that “outside” is back open, CNN lets us know that “air travel in the United States has recently approached pre-pandemic levels, according to data from the Transportation Security Administration.” Translation: you can expect packed flights and crowded terminals all summer long, traveling with vaccinated and unvaccinated passengers.

The topic of weighing passengers came up in the news recently, and some fluffy people were all worked up about it. Me, I’m on the fence. I don’t care if you know how much I weigh, but I do care about how you treat me and others after you know.

View from the Wing gave us all a heads up that “U.S. airlines may need to start weighing passengers in order to comply with FAA rules. For safety reasons, carriers need to calculate an aircraft’s weight and balance, and it has to be within allowable limits for the plane.”

I understand all of that. But how is that going to be handled?

We live in a society where shaming people is ok. Fat shaming, disability shaming, income shaming, skin tone shaming...the list is endless, and it’s not ok.

The Air Insight Group shares the guidance that “an operator that chooses to weigh passengers as part of a survey should take care to protect the privacy of passengers. The scale readout should remain hidden from public view. An operator should ensure that any passenger weight data collected remains confidential.”

My pop-off question is, will it (or can it) remain confidential? What will happen if the flight’s planned docket of passengers exceeds the weight limit? Will certain passengers be asked to come off the plane due to their weight? How will that be decided?

I understand the safety perspective of having a plane at a certain weight limit. As long as ALL passengers are treated the same and fairly, then I’m on board. However, my pop-off question is, will it (or can it) remain confidential? What will happen if the flight’s planned docket of passengers exceeds the weight limit? Will certain passengers be asked to come off the plane due to their weight? How will that be decided?
