That’s the reality some travelers could face starting May 7, 2025, when the federal government begins enforcing REAL ID requirements for domestic flights and certain federal facilities.

But here’s the good news: You can still get your STAR ID in Alabama—even after the deadline.

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) wants to clear up a common misconception. May 7 isn’t the final day to apply for a STAR ID—it’s simply when federal enforcement begins. You won’t need a STAR ID to drive or vote, but if you're planning to fly or visit a federal building, you’ll need a federally accepted form of ID like a U.S. passport or Alabama’s STAR ID.

STAR ID is Alabama’s version of the REAL ID and has been available since 2012. It’s not a separate card; it replaces your current driver license with one that includes a gold star in the top corner. If your license was issued after April 26, 2022, and doesn’t have that star, it’s not compliant.
