According to a press release, the department was honored at the Alabama Chiefs of Police Conference with the Excellence in Mental Health Award through the VitAL Initiative. The award recognizes law enforcement agencies that show strong leadership in expanding Mental Health First Aid training and strengthening responses to mental health related calls.

According to the press release, since early 2022 more than 300 Tuscaloosa Police Department personnel have completed Mental Health First Aid training through 16 different sessions. The training helps officers and staff recognize signs of mental health challenges, de escalate crisis situations safely, and connect individuals with appropriate support and treatment resources.

The effort has included a wide range of staff within the department, including patrol officers, dispatchers, investigators, and administrative personnel.

The department has also expanded its Behavior Intervention Team and brought on two social workers who assist officers when responding to mental health related calls.

“Our officers have worked hard over the past several years to improve how we respond to these calls,” said Sebo Sanders, according to the press release. “This training helps us recognize when someone needs help and how we can connect them with treatment and other resources. We often see firsthand how that approach can change and sometimes even save people’s lives.”

Officials say the recognition highlights Tuscaloosa’s growing focus on improving outcomes during mental health related emergencies and ensuring people in crisis can be connected with the help they need.
