Tuscaloosa EMA Warns Of New Scam Targeting Residents

Usually, that season is when scams tend to pick up more but it seems like Tuscaloosa County has a new scam that's circulating before the holidays.

"Hello, congratulations, you have won our giveaway," the scam message says.

"Please continue to complete the registration so that we can process the prize. We cannot process the prize if you don't register."

Tuscaloosa County EMA posted a message to their Facebook page warning residents of the scam.

"There is no registration process to pick up a weather radio and we would never call it a 'prize'." Tuscaloosa County EMA said on their Facebook page.

The scam stems from a social media giveaway the Tuscaloosa County EMA is currently doing to help citizens get prepared for severe weather season. Winners of the contest will receive a free Midland Weather Radio.

"National Preparedness Month is an observance each September to raise awareness about the importance of preparing for disasters and emergencies that could happen at any time," Tuscaloosa County EMA posted on their Facebook page.

"The 2023 theme is “Take Control in 1, 2, 3”."

It's to be noted that the page sending these messages appears to be named "Tuscaloosa County EMA" but the label of the page is "Musician/Band."

The real Tuscaloosa County EMA page is labeled as a Government Organization.
