Potential Winter Storm in Alabama: What You Need to Know
The Townsquare Media Weather Center has been monitoring the potential for a significant winter storm that will track across multiple states, including Alabama.
“Winter Storm Fern,” named by The Weather Channel, “could spread damaging ice and heavy snow for millions from Texas and Oklahoma to the Carolinas and mid-Atlantic states.”
For context, winter storm watches have already been issued for portions of Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, and Texas.
Here Is What We Know Now
An increasing risk of winter weather impacts is expected for portions of West and Central Alabama.
Our coverage area may experience winter weather threats, including a mix of cold rain, ice, sleet, and snow.
Precipitation types are expected to vary by location.
James Spann, Alabama Weather Network and Townsquare Media Tuscaloosa Chief Meteorologist, said for us to “understand there is a high chance travel will become difficult, if not impossible, over much of North Alabama (especially along and north of I-20).”
Much colder air will follow the weekend storm system, with temperatures potentially dropping into the single digits and teens.
Remain weather aware, as forecast details may continue to evolve over the coming days.
Begin making safety preparations in advance of the approaching storm system.

Current Outlook on Timing
“The risk of snow/ice will begin as early as midnight Friday night over Northwest Alabama; precipitation will cover much of the state Saturday and Sunday,” said Spann.
The Big Question Marks
- Which areas face the greatest impacts? Current projections indicate winter weather for locations near and north of I-20.
- How far south will the ice threat extend?
- What could be the level of impact on travel and infrastructure?
There will be more to come about the winter weather impacts we are facing in West Alabama. Mary K. – Weather Forecaster.
