RAPID REACTION: Alabama Pulls Away Late Against Kentucky

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- The Alabama Crimson Tide handled its business on the road in the SEC after outscoring the Kentucky Wildcats X-X in the second half, blasting past first-year head coach Will Stein and the Kentucky Wildcats to improve to 2-0 on the season and 1-0 in conference play.

It wasn't the prettiest SEC road win, but any road win in the conference is commendable. First-year starting quarterback back Keelon Russell tossed two passes to the Wildcats, setting the Tide back in a hole offensively. Despite the mistakes in the first half, the Tide were down by just four points at the halftime break. The Crimson Tide leaned heavily on the run game in the second half, with EJ Crowell, Daniel Hill, and Trae'shawn Brown powering for second-half touchdowns as the Tide galloped past Kentucky 45-17 in Lexington. What are three takeaways from Saturday afternoon's victory?

Conor Talty, Take a Bow

The Crimson Tide's kicker faced so much scrutiny during last season, and boo birds rained down on him in Bryant-Denny Stadium after he chewed out his long snapper on a routine miss last season against Eastern Illinois. So far in 2026, Talty is perfect, including three kicks that kept the Crimson Tide alive on Saturday before the offense rallied in the second half. Talty was a perfect 3-for-3 on his field goals, including a 41-yard make to cut the Tide's deficit to one. He was also perfect on his extra points, making all four extra points.

It would have been easy for Talty to say "screw this" and return somewhere closer to his hometown of Chicago when Alabama brought in veteran transfer kicker Lorcann Quinn, and yet Talty remained with the Crimson Tide and battled for the starting kicking job, which he won. So far in 2026, he's been put in some must-have situations, including Saturday against the Windcats, and so far, he's delivered at every turn. So, maybe Talty was right last season, and he is the kicker he thinks he can be.

Alabama Defense Needed to Be Lights Out...They Were Better

Alabama's defense was put in arguably the toughest position possible on Saturday: thrive against Will Stein's offense while your offense sputters, and the highly talented quarterback can't stop making mistakes. Young guys make several big plays, including sophomore Luke Metz, who picked off Kenny Minchey for a 34-yard touchdown for the Tide's first score on Saturday. Veteran linebacker Caleb Woodson was flying around, leading the team with 12 tackles, while Metz might be SEC Defensive Player of the Week after 8.0 tackles, 1 interception, the 34-yard pick-six, and one quarterback hurry. The Tide's defense got after Minchey with three quarterback hurries and four sacks, with Woodson bringing in his first two as a member of the Crimson Tide, and Thompkins getting one early before forcing a strip sack in the third quarter.

The Tide's defense was better than lights out on Saturday against Kentucky. The Tide wasn't perfect, but opportunistic play while staying true to their assignments and making opposing quarterbacks uncomfortable was crucial to the Tide's path to victory.

Run. The. Ball.

Yet again, the Tide cemented a win in the SEC late with the run game. Alabama has only played two games so far this season, but the Crimson Tide has rushed for over 150 yards in both, including 155 against the Wildcats on Saturday in Lexington. Daniel Hill led the way with 104 yards and a score, while two true freshmen stepped into the fray and took meaningful snaps again. Trae'shawn Brown scored his second-career touchdown to go along with five carries for 22 yards, while EJ Crowell had three attempts for 17 yards and a score.

Run. The. Ball. The negative plays set Alabama's offense up in bad positioning because a young quarterback was seeing new defenses for the first time. Make his life easy, and ground and pound the rock to take pressure off of a young passer. It worked on Saturday, but the Crimson Tide needs to be willing to pound the rock if Russell does start struggling at any point this season.
