The Whitney M Young, Jr.  Service Awards luncheon event means supporting youth who would not normally have an opportunity to experience scouting,” said Roland Lewis who is the Senior District Executive & ScoutReach Director for the Boy Scouts of America Black Warrior Council.

“The purpose is to raise monies that will ultimately support them with members fees, programs, and uniforms. Eliminating those obstacles frees them to enjoy the experience.”

The luncheon had a final count of close to $19,000 raised thanks to generous donors in attendance.

Among those recognized was Secretary of the Alabama Department of Labor Mr. Fritzgerald Washington, the YMCA Men’s Y Club Barnes & Downtown, Maude Whatley Health Services & DCH Medical Center. Three area educators were honored with the Elbert K. Fretwell Outstanding Educator Award. Michael B. Hogue of Buhl Elm, Carol Bagby of Southview Elm, and Holly Tanner of Myrtlewood Elm all received recognition for their dedication and hard work they're doing with our youth.

Julia Sosa of Whatley Health Services received the Vale Le Pena Award and Senior Pastor Hugh L. Spencer of Harvest Christian Church received the Earnest L. Palmer Legacy Award.

The Boy Scouts of America would love your support.  “When you understand the mission and goal is to impact the lives of youth to make ethical and moral decisions, supporting them to do that is a no brainier.” Said Roland Lewis.

“We, the Black Warrior Council, are also looking for volunteers to join us in our efforts. There are many ways to do that, please visit our website.”
