Hurricane Season: Alabama Keeps Watch on Trio of Tropical Disturbances
With the peak of hurricane season approaching in mid-September, the Townsquare Media Tuscaloosa Weather Center is closely monitoring three potential areas for tropical development.
Broad Area of Low Pressure Near the Upper Texas Coast
There is a minimal 10 percent likelihood of formation in the coming 48 hours, while this probability increases to 20 percent over the next week.
The National Hurricane Center said, "It is producing some disorganized showers and thunderstorms along and just offshore the coasts of Texas and Louisiana. This system is expected to linger near the coast through much of next week, and some slow development is possible if it meanders offshore."
Near the Lesser Antilles and Caribbean Sea
Here is the system that has caught our attention.
The likelihood of formation is nearly nonexistent in the next 48 hours. However, this probability shifts to a moderate 50 percent over the next week.
This "tropical wave located several hundred miles east of the Lesser Antilles continues to produce some disorganized showers and thunderstorms," said the National Hurricane Center.
Models show the possible track westward through the Caribbean.
The future predictions show its track toward Central America, Mexico, or the Gulf of Mexico, but it truly is too early to pinpoint its future track this far in advance.
The Weather Channel said, "If the disturbance becomes more well-defined with organized shower and thunderstorm activity, it could become a tropical depression or storm next week."
Eastern Tropical Atlantic
The probability of formation remains nearly zero over the next 48 hours, with a slight increase to a low 10 percent chance within the coming week.
This "tropical wave located just to the west of the Cabo Verde Islands is producing disorganized shower and thunderstorm activity. Development, if any, should be slow to occur while the system moves slowly westward to west-northwestward over the eastern and central tropical Atlantic through late next week," said the National Hurricane Center.
