Hurricane Francine has struck the southern Louisiana coast at Terrebonne Parish, approximately 30 miles south-southwest of Morgan City, as a category 2 hurricane.

The Weather Channel said, “Dangerous storm surge, flooding rainfall, damaging winds, and tornadoes will impact Louisiana and other parts of the Gulf Coast and South.”

Tropical storm warnings are in effect from southwest Louisiana through much of southern Mississippi, reaching Baldwin and Mobile Counties in Alabama.

Now, we are focused on the northward progression of Francine as it impacts Mississippi and Alabama on Thursday.

“Scattered power outages are possible as far north as central Mississippi, western Alabama, and the western Florida Panhandle,” said The Weather Channel.

“As the system loses tropical characteristics, the impacts will be felt well east of the center across Central Alabama with threats for tornadoes, gusty winds, and heavy rainfall,” said the National Weather Service in Birmingham.

Here Is What Alabamians Need To Know About Francine

The National Weather Service in Birmingham has provided information on possible tornadoes, winds, rain amounts, and flooding.

Tornado:

  • What:  Brief tornadoes possible.
  • Where: All of Central Alabama.
  • When: 10 AM to 9 PM on Thursday.

Wind:

  • What: Sustained winds of 15 to 25 mph with wind gusts of 30 to 40 mph. Locally higher gusts up to 45 mph. Scattered downed trees and power outages.
  • Where: Much of Central Alabama.
  • When: Midnight tonight through Midnight Thursday night.

Flooding:

  • What:  2-3" of rainfall with locally higher amounts up to 5". Isolated flooding occurs mainly in urban and poor drainage areas.
  • Where: Highest potential across northern and western portions of Central Alabama.
