Children in Tuscaloosa will now have the opportunity to play basketball free of charge thanks to a new partnership between Sports Illustrated Resorts and the Benjamin Barnes YMCA. The new connection, negotiated by Tuscaloosa City Councilors Joseph Eatmon, Raevan Howard, and Cassius Lanier, will cover all league fees, allowing 300 young people to participate in the YMCA basketball program at no cost.

By eliminating a major financial barrier, the initiative ensures that every child—regardless of economic circumstances—can experience the life-changing benefits of organized sports.

“This effort, supported by members of the Tuscaloosa City Council, brings together Sports Illustrated Resorts and the YMCA in a way that directly invests in our youth,” said Councilman Joseph Eatmon. “Basketball teaches discipline, teamwork, and perseverance—skills that extend far beyond the court. This is an investment in the future of our young people and our community.”

“At Sports Illustrated Resorts, we believe in the power of sports to build character, create opportunity, and strengthen communities,” said Austin Bolton, Director of University and Community Partnerships for Sports Illustrated Resorts. “This partnership with Tuscaloosa City leaders represents our commitment to ensuring every athlete has the chance to develop not just their athletic skills, but life skills that will serve them long after they leave the basketball court.”

“This partnership with the City leaders and Sports Resort Development is a community investment—the driving force of the YMCA mission,” said Lakeda Smith, Executive Director of Benjamin Barnes YMCA.  By creating opportunities for youth, we are opening doors for young people to grow in spirit, mind, and body. Together, we are building opportunities that nurture potential, inspire participation, and strengthen the future of our community.”

The Benjamin Barnes YMCA has a long history of serving Tuscaloosa’s youth, providing mentorship, safe spaces, and athletic opportunities. This sponsorship reflects a shared commitment between city leadership and community partners to make sure no child is left on the sidelines due to financial challenges.
