Sunday mornings usually means a cup of coffee and the classic movie channel. Today I was surprised at what I discovered. A movie called A Time to Sing starring none other than country music icon Hank Williams Junior. While I love most of Hank Williams Jr.'s music, I never knew he made movies. Movies as early as 1968. A Time to Sing was indeed made in 1968 and starred some really big-name actors and actresses. And of course, some surprises too.

It had a surprisingly star-studded cast. You’ve got Hank Snow, Pat Buttram, Shelley Fabares. It’s one of those films where you keep going, “Wait, that person’s in this too?” Kinda makes sense.

Hank Williams Jr. did do a few films back then. The first was “A Time to Sing” (1968). He played a young country singer, and he was 19 then. A very young Bocephus.

So besides “A Time to Sing,” he appeared in a few other films, like “Kelly’s Heroes” and “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.” But a lot of his movie connections are through soundtracks rather than on-screen roles. If you’re looking for another actual appearance, “Roadie” from 1980 is a fun one.

Hank Jr. turns up on a few movie soundtracks, actually. “Kelly’s Heroes” had “Sunshine.” “Brubaker” had “All for the Love of Sunshine.” “Roadie” includes “Family Tradition” and “Outlaw Women.” And he even appears on screen there. Later films like “Pink Cadillac”, “Nothing but Trouble,” and “Country Strong” use his songs as well. If you’re going down that rabbit hole, “Roadie” is probably the most fun next stop.

I actually reached out to Hank Williams, Jr.‘s wife, Brandi, to tell her about my discovery on the classic movie channel this morning. She was aware that he had made movies when he was younger. I wonder how many of Hank's movies she has actually seen? Maybe now she will at least look for a time to sing. I would not have recognized Hank in this 1968 classic if I had not seen the credits before finding the movie. Both of us looked nothing like he does now. I recommend that you look for A Time to Sing (1968 with Hank Williams Junior. And real Hank Junior fans would definitely enjoy Roadie.
