Alabama State University Makes HBCU History with YMCA Deal
The year 2026 is looking really good for this Alabama university as they recently solidified a historic deal for their campus.
A YMCA facility will be now be housed on the campus of Alabama State University, according to an announcement made by the school on Monday Oct. 13th. The groundbreaking decision marks a historic moment as this will be the first YMCA on the campus of an HBCU in the country.

“Today’s announcement is a shining example of what we mean when we say ‘CommUniversity’ in both spirit and in action,” said ASU President Dr. Quinton T. Ross, Jr. in the announcement.
“It’s a demonstration of how we as an institution are committed not only to educating students, but also to uplifting and empowering the community we serve.”
This YMCA will feature equipment that's state of the art inside a renovated 5,000 square foot facility on ASU's campus. The space is set t serve as a health, wellness and community engagement hub managed and staffed by YMCA personnel.
“This is the first YMCA on an HBCU campus nationwide,” said YMCA of Greater Montgomery President and CEO AJ Hernandez in the announcement.
“This means not only community growth, but it means access, potential achieved, and staff revitalized. Youths can now see themselves not only growing through the YMCA but also growing through the University together.”
The project will introduce a dynamic slate of collaborative programs aimed at fostering inclusive wellness for ASU students and the greater Montgomery community. Highlights include:
- Health fairs
- Mental wellness workshops
