Alabamians on Guard for Severe Weather: Tornadoes, Hail, Winds
We have been tracking an extensive weather system that has the potential to make its way through Alabama today. Also, we are monitoring the possibility of an arctic blast early next week across the Deep South. We have grown more confident in the frigid temperatures and possible wintery conditions.
Timing Outlook
Storms should enter West Alabama around 8 a.m. and exit the state in the afternoon hours. The Townsquare Media coverage area is split between the 8 a.m. to Noon and 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. time windows.
Risk Areas and Levels
In Alabama, you are in one of two risk areas. Northwest and West Alabama are under an "enhanced risk," and the other counties are under a "slight risk,” said the Storm Prediction Center.
Probable Severe Weather Threats
James Spann, ABC 33/40, and Townsquare Media Tuscaloosa Chief Meteorologist said the “main concern today will come from strong/damaging straight-line winds with thunderstorms across Alabama. But an isolated tornado or two is certainly possible, especially south of I-20, where instability values will be higher.”
In addition, pay attention to the gradient winds which are not related to thunderstorms. These winds will average 15-30 mph, with gusts to 45 mph possible. The National Weather Service in Birmingham said that the “gusty winds will blow around unsecured objects. Also, trees and large limbs could be blown down, and power outages may occur.”
