Alabamians Can Expect Below Normal Temperatures for Early January
A surge of anticipation surrounds the arrival of a significant cold wave, with the initial blast of cold temperatures set to hit on Monday, January 6. However, that wave could be followed by another even colder blast of temperatures.
This cold wave is expected to bring very cold conditions to the Townsquare Media coverage area, which means we will start 2025 with below-normal temperatures for this time of year.
The National Weather Service in Birmingham said, “Looking ahead to the following week, be careful if you see maps on social media with exact forecasts for days more than a week away. What we can say for certain the following week is that there is a greater than 80% chance that temperatures will be below normal for early January.”
Snow Chances?
James Spann, ABC 33/40, and Townsquare Media Tuscaloosa Chief Meteorologist said, “Global models show strong signals of a surface low forming in the northern Gulf of Mexico by Thursday or Friday (Jan 9/10). This is when we have some potential for "winter mischief" across parts of the Deep South. Who gets snow? How much will fall? This is still ten days out, and it is just too early to answer those questions, but the players are certainly on the field.”
The current GFS model showcases the West Alabama area in the zone of a “30 to 50% probability of snow greater than one inch through January 15.”
The Townsquare Media Weather Center will continue to monitor this developing weather situation.
