Alabama Severe Weather Threat Includes Heavy Rain, Flooding, Wind
We are closely monitoring an active weather situation headed to Alabama that could impact portions of the Townsquare Media coverage area.
Alabamians should prepare for “lots of rain and wind to Alabama tomorrow into Tuesday morning,” said James Spann, ABC 33/40, and Townsquare Media Tuscaloosa Chief Meteorologist.
Possible Gradient Winds
Ahead of the storm system, “winds will increase across the area beginning late Monday afternoon before thunderstorms are expected to begin. Gusts as high as 43 to 48 mph could be expected,” said the National Weather Service in Birmingham.
Risk Areas
The Storm Prediction Center has defined a level 1 out of 5, a “marginal risk” for portions of the Townsquare Media coverage area. This includes all of Greene, Hale, Perry, and Sumter counties and a portion of Bibb, Pickens, and Tuscaloosa counties.
A “slight risk” category exists for counties below our coverage area.
For those traveling, please be aware that a severe weather threat should continue in Southeast Alabama until Tuesday afternoon.
Threats
According to the National Weather Service in Birmingham, the overall threats are damaging winds, isolated flash flooding, and a brief tornado is possible.
Spann said the air is expected to remain stable, significantly reducing the risk of tornadoes. However, the Gulf Coast remains the primary area of concern for potential tornado activity.
We are expected to receive 2 to 3 inches of rain across Alabama, so flooding is a concern.
Timing
The projected timeframe for this active weather should occur between Monday night, 11:00 p.m., and Tuesday at 10 a.m. Currently, the Townsquare Media coverage area is in the Tuesday 2 a.m. to 7 a.m. period.
As always, we encourage you to stay aware of severe weather. It's important to note that factors such as timing, risk areas, and potential threats may vary as a weather system approaches our region. Rest assured, we will provide timely updates as new information becomes available.
