Alabama basketball secured its first SEC win of the season against Mississippi State tonight 90-69. In the SEC home opener the Crimson Tide bounced back well after losing in double overtime against Florida this past Saturday. The victory brings Alabama’s conference record to 1-1. Alabama has now won six of its last eight contests.

Alabama was led offensively by John Petty Jr., scoring 18 points off 6-`10 shooting and 4-7 from beyond the arc. Kira Lewis Jr. pitched in with 17 points, Galin Smith and James Bolden both contributed 11. The Crimson Tide as a whole made 10 three-point shots in the game.  It was the Tide’s fifth consecutive game scoring 90 or more points in a game, a first for the Alabama program.

Alabama maintained a lead throughout the game, taking an eight point lead into the locker room at halftime. Each instance of Mississippi State closing the gap in the second half saw a response from Alabama to stretch the lead back out in its favor. The Bulldogs saw two of its starters foul out in the ball game forward Reggie Perry exited the game with 6:56 left to play and guard Nick Weatherspoon left with 53 seconds left in the game. Alabama was able to take advantage of the Bulldogs while Perry spent time on the bench with foul trouble.

Alabama’s next game will be Saturday, January 11 in Rupp Arena against Kentucky at 11 a.m. central time. The Wildcats have won both its conference games to open up SEC play, defeating Missouri and Georgia. The game will be televised on ESPN.
