The Adopt-A-School program will celebrate its 40th anniversary Thursday with its annual school year kickoff and a new school joining the party. Hale County Middle School in Moundville, through its partnership with Alabama ONE Credit Union is becoming a part of the program that was founded in 1985, with four charter businesses, B.F. Goodrich, Northport Medical Center, Shelton State Community College and Phifer Inc.

In a press release from the Chamber of Commerce of West Alabama, which coordinates the organization, Alabama ONE Events Officer Megan Roakes was quoted as saying the partnership is part of the credit union's commitment to give back to the communities they serve. "We are committed to working alongside the school to support the staff, students, and parents to make a positive impact."

Alabama ONE has supported Hale County Middle School in various ways in the past but this marks the first time the partnership is being recognized as an official Adopt-A-School collaboration.

The press release also quoted Hale County Middle School Assistant Principal Katie Andoe voicing excitement that the partnership is now official. "We cannot wait for all of the great things this will bring to our school and community. Thank you for this opportunity."

The partnership will result in monthly leadership awards for students, teachers and parents. It will also reduce out-of-pocket money being spent by teachers for classroom supplies.

Recent studies have revealed shortfalls in Alabama student financial literacy. So, in addition to the Adopt-A-School partnership, Alabama ONE will continue to offer the Banzai online-financial literacy program. The internet program teaches real-world finance and practical life skills to give students more confidence and ability to manage their finances.

The Chamber of Commerce of West Alabama's Adopt-A-School Program is an essential partnership between local businesses and organizations to support schools across West Alabama. The program is designed to enhance the exchange of resources and expertise between schools and the private sector.

Huntsville City Schools Superintendent Dr. Clarence Sutton, Jr. will keynote the Thursday school kickoff at the Bryant Conference Center Thursday between 11:30 am and 1:00pm.
