The countdown to college football kickoff officially begins today for Alabama fans as the Crimson Tide reports back to campus. Practice will actually begin tomorrow as the Tide gets ready for Kalen DeBoer's debut as head coach.

As is normal this time of the year, Bama will begin practice in some repressive heat. A Heat Advisory is in effect until 9:00 tonight for all of West Alabama. The heat index will approach 108 degrees. Limit your time outdoors, stay hydrated and DO NOT leave people and pets in unattended vehicles.

Topping the News:

Controversy over an alleged racial slur used by a white co-owner of the iconic Nicks Original Filet House in West Tuscaloosa continues. The local NAACP and those involved in the incident are demanding an apology from Jack Moltz for allegedly using the term in reference to a group of black customers who were visiting with a white friend. The NAACP has called for a boycott of the landmark restaurant.

23-year-old UA student Gambill Colvard has been banned from the UA campus in the wake of his arrest for sexual assault of a female UA student. The North Carolina native is charged with photographing, filming and sexually assaulting an unconscious victim off campus after visiting a bar. The female awoke the next morning as realized she had been reported drugged and assaulted.

18-year-ol Jackson Luke Overton of Winfield has been identified as the shooter in a homicide in downtown Tuscaloosa Saturday night. 21-year-old Howell Booth of Holland, Ill died at the scene after the two allegedly got into an argument. Overton is being held with no bond under Aniah's Law.


The Northport Post Office located at 4200 McFarland Blvd., Tuscaloosa Post Office at
1313 22nd AVE and Jasper Post Office at 2101 3rd Ave. in Jasper will be the West Alabama sites for one of 37 simultaneous career fairs in 118 cities across Alabama and Mississippi on Thursday. The fairs are scheduled for August 1, 2024, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Among positions available are:

  • Rural Carrier Associate (RCA) – At $20.38 per hour, an RCA will have to be able to work a flexible schedule and be available to work throughout the week (Sunday through Saturday), and
  • Assistant Rural Carrier (ARC) – At $20.38 per hour, this employee will deliver and collect packages along routes in rural and suburban areas and will provide a variety of services to customers along an assigned route.

According to the Rural Letter Carriers Association, the successful applicant may be required to provide their own vehicle for package delivery. As an ARC, you will provide service to your community on weekends and holidays or up to seven days each week; whichever suits your lifestyle.


School bells will be ringing next week in Tuscaloosa City and County schools and most other school systems in West Alabama. But medical and school officials are advising to get your student back on to school sleep schedule now. Wes Stubblefield, an ADPH Assistant Health Officer advises getting children back on to a regular school night sleep schedule prior to the start of school will help get them off to a better beginning for the new school year.


Some Alabama State Prison inmates have filed suit against Gov. Ivey and the Department of Corrections. They claim they are treated like slave labor and are retaliated against if they complain.


The Tuscaloosa County School System is hoping to improve security at all intermediate, middle and high schools with the installation of a high-tech weapons detections system. The news system security systems were funded through a grant from the Alabama Lieutenant Governor's Office.

Topping Sports News:

The Iron Bowl on Ice is scheduled to faceoff the new collegiate hockey season for the University of Alabama. The Frozen Tide will meet the Auburn Tiger at the Pelham Civic Complex on Friday, September 6th.
The student run, non-NCAA team has launched a fundraising campaign. The team is campaigning to raise $50,000 before the start of its season.

Tide QB Jalen Milroe has been named to the Maxwell Award Watchlist for the 2024 college football season. The award is presented to the best player in college football as voted on by the media.

Indiana businessman Bert Neff has been sentenced to eight months in prison and three years of supervised probation for his part in a betting scandal that led to the firing of then Alabama Baseball head Coach Brad Bohannon.

Neff pled guilty to several charges stemming from the 2023 incident while Alabama was playing LSU.
