The week as-a-whole will be fairly pleasant for mid-winter.

Tonight: Mostly clear, with a low around 37. Southwest wind 5 to 10 mph becoming north after midnight.

Wednesday: Sunny, with a high near 56. North wind 5 to 10 mph.

Wednesday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 32. North wind around 5 mph becoming calm in the evening.

Thursday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 59. Calm wind becoming northeast around 5 mph.

Thursday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 37.

Friday: Sunny, with a high near 65.

Friday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 40.

The Weekend: During the day Saturday will be mostly sunny but rain chances move back in Saturday night and hang around into the start of the new work week. Highs will be in the uppers 50s to mid 60s with lows in the mid to upper 40s.

Topping the News:

There have still been no arrests reported from that armed robbery at Mill’s Pharmacy in Brookwood yesterday. Brookwood Police say two armed black males entered the pharmacy on Highway 216 across from Brookwood Elementary. They retrained staff at the pharmacy and stole drugs before fleeing the scene in a Black Honda Accord. There were no injuries. Police are asking anyone with information to call 205-556-0103.


 

The Biden administration will begin implementing new student loan forgiveness relief as soon as the end of this week instead of this summer. But a new Republican bill aims to see Biden's student loan forgiveness plans repealed. They call Biden's plan debt redistribution. Alabama Senator Tommy Tuberville is calling it buy votes.


 

 

 

A 3-day grand opening Thursday through Saturday for the new German Deli Rolf’s in Temerson Square will also serve as a fund raiser for the owner. Rolf Meyer’s family home in Buhl was gutted by a fire from lint in the clothes dryer over the weekend. Donations will be accepted to help the Meyers recover from the fire.


 

Ground will be broken Friday at 2pm for improvements to Kaulton Park on Pine Street. The upgrade will include a new playground, public Wi-Fi, park lighting, security cameras and ballfield upgrades.  The $1.7 million dollar project will be funded by Elevate Tuscaloosa.


 

Stacker, a media company that creates and shares data-based articles, has listed Alabama as the fourth least expensive state in which to live. They base their finding on typically lower gasoline prices and housing cost 30% lower than the national average. They also point out national low property taxes contribute to the state having one of the worst education systems in the country. Mississippi is the least expensive state but like Alabama low taxes result in poor education and healthcare.


 

The 2024 Income Tax season is underway and so are scams intent on taking your money, especially if you are a senior citizen. The Better Business Bureau advises that among fake calls are scammers claiming to be from the IRS and telling people they owe back-taxes and asking for a credit card number to pay.  The IRS reminds filers, they do not call people.

The IRS advises they will never call asking for money or personal identification.


 

High power bills from this month’s extremely cold temperatures have Alabama Power customers complaining about statements double the usual cost. Customers say they expected an increase but nothing like double the cost.

National energy watchdog organizations claim Alabamians pay some of the highest power bills in the country with Alabama Power having a high profit margin due to political power, a claim the power company disputes.



 

In Sports:

According to ESPN's Chris Low, Hugh Freeze is hiring DJ Durkin to be Auburn Football’s Defensive Coordinator. It will be Durkin’s fourth different stint as a DC in the SEC. He was at Texas A&M the past two seasons, Ole Miss the two seasons prior to that and Florida in 2013-14.


 

Former Washington QB Michael Penix Jr. is in Mobile for this weekend's Resse's Senior Bowl Game. He was asked by reporters what he thought of Alabama hiring his former head coach.

Penix encouraged Crimson Tide fans to be excited about the man who is replacing Nick Saban as the head football coach in Tuscaloosa.

“He’s an amazing coach,” Penix said. “He’s gonna push the guys extremely hard. He’s gonna make sure every player is 100 percent prepared game day, especially on the offensive side of the ball.

He predicted Bama will win a national championship within DeBoer's first three years at The Capstone.


From UA Athletics: Alabama baseball will begin week two of pre-season practice this afternoon. It will be the Crimson Tide's first complete week of full-team practice after using last weekend to open the spring slate.

Tuesday through Thursday will feature a 3 p.m. CT practice each day. The team will then take part in practice-scrimmage splits over the weekend. The Tide is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start to practice on Friday with an intrasquad scrimmage set for 2:30 p.m. Alabama's Saturday and Sunday slate will feature an 11:30 a.m. workout followed by a 1 p.m. first pitch for each day's intrasquad.
