West Alabama Tuesday Briefing
It is Tuesday, November 28, 2023. A cold start to today will be surpassed by a little colder beginning to tomorrow morning across West Alabama. Temperatures will briefly fall two to three degrees below the freezing mark overnight here.
The southern third of the state is actually under a Freeze Warning for tonight. Sub-freezing temperatures as low as 28 are expected from South Central Alabama to the coast overnight.
Temperatures will begin to rebound tomorrow as a large area of precipitation moves in from the west. Strong to severe thunderstorms west of Alabama are not expected to continue as the system moves into our state. However, at worst case scenario any threat that does materialize would be a low-end Marginal (1 in 5) Risk.
According to NOAA it will take one to two inches of rainfall to break the back of the ongoing drought and it looks like we may get what we need. Widespread rain totals of 2" to 4" are possible, with potentially higher amounts. Localized flooding is also a risk.
So, keep your fingers crossed.

Today: Sunny, with a high near 55. Northwest wind 5 to 10 mph.
Tonight: Clear, with a low around 28. Northwest wind around 5 mph becoming calm in the evening.
Wednesday: Sunny, with a high near 58. Calm wind becoming southwest around 5 mph in the morning.
Wednesday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 34. South wind around 5 mph.
Thursday: Partly sunny, with a high near 60. Southeast wind 5 to 15 mph.
Thursday Night: Partly sunny, with a high near 60. Southeast wind 5 to 15 mph.
Thursday Night: A chance of showers, then showers and possibly a thunderstorm after midnight. Low around 45. Chance of precipitation is 90%
End of the Week and through the Weekend: Rain each day Friday through at least Monday. Highs in the mid 60s to mid 70s and lows in the mid to upper 50s.
Rain has knocked down the wildfire threat across Alabama. For weeks the fires numbered in the hundred or so range each day. This morning only eleven are burning. Forecasters believe it will take 1 to 3 inches of rain to totally break the drought and end the wildfires. ABC3340 Chief Meteorologist James Spann tells us that could happen.
Moundville Police Chief Toby Banks is asking business owners and their employees to use caution for personal safety after the Big Sandy Food Mart was robbed by two men at gunpoint over the weekend. Banks urges store employees and customers to survey their surroundings for suspicious behavior when they enter a business.
The City of Tuscaloosa will hold the Gary Fitts Street renaming ceremony Thursday. The event will be attended by Mayor Maddox and council member Lee Busby as well as Fitts family members. Fitts was a local insurance company owner and was heavily involved in the Tuscaloosa community. The rename will be at 1806 6th Street at 10am.
Democrat New York U-S Senator Chuck Shumer is vowing to break Alabama Senator Tommy Tuberville’s hold of top military promotions over the Pentagon’s abortion policy. The Senate Majority Leader took to the upper chamber floor to call Tuberville’s promotions block “brazen and reckless”. Shumer will introduce a resolution that would by-pass Tuberville’s hold and allow large block promotions.
As of yesterday, Grocery bags, Bread bags, zip top bags, dry cleaning bags, plastic shipping envelopes, bubble wrap, as well as cracker and cereal box liners can no longer be recycled in Tuscaloosa. The change is a result of regulations that no longer allow the plastic wrap to be processed in China.
24-year-old Efon Guissepe Carter has been charged with four felonies after an investigation allegedly found he was using social media to solicit explicit material from a young child here. Carter is being held in the Tuscaloosa County Jail without bond.
We have had Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Today is Giving Tuesday. The day is intended to bring attention to the act of giving to those in need.
In Sports:
The line has widened a bit on Saturday’s Southeastern Conference Title game outcome. The consensus line has gone up by a full point with Georgia now a 5 ½ point favorite to beat Alabama.
From UA Athletics: Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe and offensive lineman Kadyn Proctor each earned Southeastern Conference weekly honors, the league office announced Monday morning. Milroe was named the Co-Offensive Player of the Week while Proctor was selected as the Co-Freshman of the Week.
The weekly conference honor is the third for Milroe and first for Proctor while they represent and the Tide's 11th and 12th overall this season.
From UA Athletics: The No. 23/20 Alabama men's basketball team will host Clemson in the first annual ACC/SEC Challenge tonight at Coleman Coliseum.
The Crimson Tide has currently won 19-straight games at Coleman, which ranks as the second-longest home winning streak in Division I, winning by an average of 26.8 points per contest. The Alabama-Clemson matchup features two of the top offenses in the country, as UA has the No. 1 ranked offense according to KenPom.
