It is Monday December 11, 2023. That cold front that dropped tornadoes in Alabama, Mississippi and Tennessee over the weekend has now ushered in cold overnight temperature readings. Most all of North Alabama began the new work week either at or below freezing this morning. Tonight, will be the same before we experience a warming trend for the remainder of the week.

The warmer weather will also bring rain 20% to 30% chances for the coming weekend.

Today: Sunny, with a high near 53. North wind around 5 mph.

Tonight: Clear, with a low around 30. Northeast wind around 5 mph becoming calm.

Tuesday: Increasing clouds, with a high near 58. Calm wind becoming northeast around 5 mph.

Tuesday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 33. Northeast wind around 5 mph.

Wednesday: Partly sunny, with a high near 60. Northeast wind 5 to 10 mph.

Wednesday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 39.

Remainder of the Week: Mostly sunny days with highs near 60. Mostl clear nights with lows near 40.

Topping the News:

National Weather Service Birmingham survey crews have rated the damage across Mountain Brook, Vestavia Hills and Homewood as a result of two EF-1 tornadoes. Damage was significant but no injuries were reported. Some residents are complaining that there was no tornado warning, but weather service meteorologists remind us there were two severe thunderstorm warnings in effect from Tuscaloosa thru Jefferson County at the time. They say severe thunderstorms can, and do, often produce small tornadoes without notice. November and December are the secondary sever weather season months for Alabama and the south.


 

Temperatures slowly crawled past freezing this morning and Alabama Department of Public Health Dr. Wes Stubblefield is warning that kids heading to school, adult going to work and indoors elderly need to be protect from hypothermia. Dr. Stubblefield points out hypothermia can happen in minutes outdoors and in as few as ten minutes in inadequately heated indoors. According to data from the Alabama Department of Public Health

18 Alabamians died from hypothermia in 2022, that is eight more than 2021.


 

Remember that Change.org petition demanding that Northport Council President Jeff Hogg resign? It was started by community activist David Allgood on November 30th. It now has 122 signatures.

In his petition Allgood claims Hogg uses unethical, deceptive, and aggressive tactics that have damaged the city and destroyed the public trust. A signatory, Debbie Bond, agreed, writing, "The lack of support and destruction of our green space, community center and park and now the destruction of Kentuck Park and lack of support for the annual festival is the last straw".


 

Contrary to some media reports, the Palace Bingo Hall in Greene County, near the Tuscaloosa County line, is not open. Some media outlets have been reporting that the Greene County Sheriff’s Office has given the Palace Bingo Hall the go ahead to reopen as long as it meets certain requirements. But a social media post by the hall’s owners emphatically says the hall is not open and that they will post information on Facebook if they do.

Gift cards are a popular Christmas present, but law enforcement agencies and the Better Business Bureau of Central Alabama are warning to be aware of gift card cloning. It is a scam where cards have already been drained of their value but are still for sale.

You can check the bar code to determine if a card has value on it.

The holiday season is a top time for a variety of scams.

The updated odds-on New Year’s Day’s Rose Bowl game between Alabama and Michigan has dropped the Wolverines to a 1- point favorite after opening a 2 ½ point favorite.


 

When Cincinnati QB Jake Browning left with an injury in the fourth quarter against the Indianapolis Colts yesterday, former Bama signal caller A-J McCarron made his first appearance in the NFL since Dec. 17, 2017. Browning reentered the game later.

McCarron has been playing for St. Louis in the XFL.
