A 25-year-old Tuscaloosa woman was charged with murder Thursday following the death of her year-old son, who had been on life support at Children's Hospital in Birmingham for 10 months.

Lt. Teena Richardson, a spokeswoman for the Tuscaloosa Police Department, said the child was rushed to DCH Regional Medical Center last March, when he was eight weeks old and suffering from severe head trauma.

According to an article in the Tuscaloosa News, the boy's mother, Lakendra Yashekia Williams, told investigators that she had accidentally dropped the baby or might have elbowed him in her sleep, but later admitted she had harmed him because he was "whining."

The two-month-old child was transported to Children's in Birmingham and was placed on life support in their Pediatric ICU. After 10 months in that state, the boy died this Monday, February 11th.

Richardson said Williams was charged with first-degree domestic violence assault when the child was first hospitalized in March. She was arrested again Thursday at the Ole English Inn in Tuscaloosa and charged with murder and aggravated child abuse.

Williams was taken to the Tuscaloosa County Jail, where she remains pending a $60,000 bond.
