Tuscaloosa County Schools System teacher James Steven Cox was arrested during school Friday. The Lloyd Wood Education Center teacher is charged with public intoxication.

The Tuscaloosa County Sheriff's Office has confirmed that Cox was arrested at the school in Northport and was transported to the Tuscaloosa County Jail where he was booked. Bond was set at $300.00.

A message was posted on the Lloyd Wood Education Center website this morning and addressed to family, faculty and staff from Superintendent Dr. Keri Johnson addressing the issue. In the message she advised that the school system is not able to comment publicly due to laws governing employee privacy.

"However, it is important for our families and community to know that Mr. Cox is on administrative leave and TCSS will cooperate fully with law enforcement in their investigation." Dr, Johnson noted.

She also added, "While we are limited in what we can discuss about an investigation involving an employee, please reach out to your school administrator if you ever have any questions or concerns to express. "

Alabama law defines the offense of public intoxication as, "Appearing in a public place while under the influence of alcohol or drugs." The offense of public intoxication in Alabama is categorized as a violation as opposed to a misdemeanor. It can result in a jail sentence of up to 30 days and a fine of up to $200. However, other circumstances can place additional severity to the charge depending on where the incident took place, and the circumstances involved.

Cox faces not only legal issues but school disciplinary action as well if found guilty.
