Tornadoes and Damaging Winds Target Alabama Next Week
We are focused on a severe multi-state weather threat across the southern region, including Alabama, for next week.
“A strong low-pressure system is forecast to form by Tuesday in the central U.S. That will draw increasingly warm and humid air north from the Gulf,” said The Weather Channel. “A strong jet stream is also forecast to punch across that warm, humid air.”
Timing
The storm system should enter Alabama late Tuesday night and continue through Wednesday's overnight hours, placing the system in southeast Alabama Wednesday morning. Information indicates that it will be moving quickly through our state.
Risk Areas
The Storm Prediction Center places most of the state under a 2 out of 5 risk level for severe storms, with a tiny sliver at a 3 out of 5 risk level right at the Mississippi-Alabama state line. As we watch storms progress, I do pay close attention to Mississippi. Most of their state is under a 3 out of 5 risk level.
Threats
“The main threat will come from strong, potentially damaging straight line winds and downed trees,” said James Spann, ABC 33/40 and Townsquare Media Tuscaloosa Chief Meteorologist. “However, wind profiles support a few brief isolated tornadoes within the line.”
Concerns
Severe weather at night poses a significant safety concern, as most residents are typically asleep during this time. To stay safe, ensure you have a reliable way to receive weather alerts, know the location of your safe shelter, and be familiar with your county, its specific area, and the surrounding counties.
