The ‘Annabelle’ Sequel’s Official New Title Is ‘Annabelle: Creation’
2014’s Conjuring spinoff Annabelle was a runaway box office hit, presumably because dolls will always be scary and people will always love being scared by them. Because any B.O. success warrants a sequel these days, David F. Sandberg (Lights Out) is hard at work on a new one, which released a teaser last fall. Today we’ve learned that the Annabelle sequel’s official title is Annabelle: Creation.
Sandberg shared the news on his Twitter:
If you know the premise, the title makes a lot of sense. Annabelle: Creation is a prequel to Annabelle, which itself is a prequel to The Conjuring. The preprequelquel tells the story of Annabelle’s, ah, creation at the hands of a doll maker: twenty years after their daughter tragically dies, a couple decide to open their home to a nun and a few orphans who have been turned out of their orphanage. Obviously, everything goes to hell.
Annabelle: Creation seems to be the latest in a string of Hollywood sequels that love to explain away the mysteries in their predecessors. Who knows, maybe finding out more about Annabelle’s origins could make for some chilling storytelling. Or it could needlessly add a complicated origin narrative to something that’s creepier when left mysterious.
We’ll see when Annabelle: Creation hits theaters August 11.
