Memorial Day celebrations were happening all around the country over the weekend, and Scotty McCreery honored the occasion in a particularly special way. The country singer took the stage at the 2017 National Memorial Day Concert at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C., to perform his song "The Dash."

Looking sharp in a suit complete with a gray dress coat and black tie, McCreery delivered a heartfelt performance of the song, backed by a beautiful patriotic set and elegant orchestra. It was a fitting choice to say the least, detailing the story of a town that comes together to honor a fallen hero: "There'll never come a day / That you don't want 'em back / It ain't about the numbers / Chiseled in concrete / It's how they lived their lives / In the dash between."

McCreery's rendition of "The Dash" was made that much more emotional as images of a fallen soldier with his family scrolled across the screen. Members of the family were seated in the crowd and wiped away tears as he sang. The song came to a fine finish with the country star backed by a choir and an orchestra.

"The Dash" is featured on the American Idol winner's 2013 album, See You Tonight, and was co-written by Kyle Jacobs ("More Than a Memory") and LoCash's Preston Brust. The album debuted at No. 1 on Billboard's Top Country Albums chart. McCreery recently released another emotional song, his new single "Five More Minutes," which cites the final moments of his grandfather's life.
