
SCLC of Tuscaloosa County Hosts MLK Unity Day Events
The Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) - Tuscaloosa County Chapter Executive Board plans to hold three events on Monday, January 20, for its annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Unity Day. These gatherings honor Dr. King's legacy and unite the community to celebrate unity and progress.
SCLC of Tuscaloosa County Hosts MLK Unity Day Events
MLK Unity Day Breakfast
The day’s events will kick off with the MLK Unity Day Breakfast at 8 a.m. at Beulah Baptist Church, located at 3100 25th Street in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Sandra Johnson from Townsquare Media - Praise 93.3 will host the event.
Dr. Joseph F. Scrivner, Dean of Chapel at Stillman College, will be the keynote speaker, bringing his insight and leadership to the program. In addition, the Stillman College Choir will deliver a powerful musical performance.
The SCLC press release said, “During the Unity Breakfast, the SCLC Tuscaloosa County Chapter will present four Mountain Top Awards to distinguished community advocates, leaders, and civil rights pioneers. The Chapter will also celebrate the legacy, service, and impact of Mr. James Horton in Tuscaloosa and West Alabama.”

MLK Unity March
The Noon MLK Unity March will begin at Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Elementary School and travel to Tuscaloosa City Hall. The Tuscaloosa National Pan Hellenic Council will be the Grand Marshalls for the 2025 MLK Unity March.
Participants are encouraged to line up in front of the school at 11:15 a.m. The march aims to commemorate Dr. King's legacy and inspire a sense of unity within the community.
Mass Rally
The mass rally is scheduled for 5 p.m. at the historic First African Baptist Church at 2621 Stillman Boulevard. This pivotal gathering will honor Dr. King's vision by fostering community connection and shared commitment to progress. The SCLC's mission “is to educate youth and adults in the areas of personal responsibility, leadership potential, and community service; to ensure economic justice and civil rights and to eradicate racism wherever it exists.”

The MLK Day of Events will conclude with a legacy and retirement celebration honoring Dr. Charles Steele, Jr., President of the International Southern Christian Leadership Conference. This event is a tribute to Dr. Steele’s impactful leadership and enduring contributions to the mission of justice and equality.
