Police in Tuscaloosa have identified the man who was fatally shot at an area apartment complex Saturday night.

Captain Jack Kennedy, the commander of the multi-agency Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit, said the victim was 36-year-old Joseph Baskins, a Tuscaloosa man.

Officers were called to River Road Apartments off Jack Warner Parkway at 11 p.m. Saturday on reports of a shooting there.

Baskins was pronounced dead at the scene.

No arrests have been made so far in the case, and Kennedy said earlier this week that claims of self-defense have been raised. The VCU will collect evidence and interview witnesses, then present the case to a grand jury at a later date. The grand jury will then determine if criminal charges are warranted for Baskins' death.

Kennedy said the VCU believes "most of the key witnesses and evidence" in this case have been identified and interviewed or examined, but still said anyone who witnessed the shooting who has not yet spoken to police should contact the VCU at 205-464-8690.
