The Northport city council is considering limiting the number of dogs allowed in a residential home to three.  The city code already has a clause that makes it against the law for any person to keep more than three dogs in an enclosure within the corporate limits of the city where the perimeter of such enclosure is less than 50 feet from another residence or dwelling.

According to the Tuscaloosa News, the new ordinance would eliminate the old law entirely and replace it with one that has clearer language. There are some exceptions written into the proposed ordinance and households that already house more than three dogs will not be “grandfathered in” if the law passes, but they would be given a “reasonable amount of time” to comply.  The council on has delayed action on the ordinance because it is proving to be more controversial than expected
