The brave men and women that have served our country will be honored during Memorial Day events in Tuscaloosa this month.

This celebration always falls on the last Monday of May, which is the 25th this year. This holiday always marks the unofficial start of summer so get outside and enjoy this great American holiday.

If you are still making plans for the day, here are some events taking place around Tuscaloosa for Memorial Day.

2015 Memorial Day Program at Veterans Memorial Park

This annual program will take place in front of University Mall at the Veterans Memorial Park at 9 AM and feature nationally recognized author John O'Malley. The former Marine has published 12 books including Men of Men-Stories of Courage, about the Medal of Honor recipients with ties to Alabama.

The event will last about an hour and will also feature the Presentation of Colors by the Paul W. Bryant High School USMC JROTC Color Guard, Pledge of Allegiance, National Anthem, and Armed Forces Medley and Gun Volley salute and Taps by the Tuscaloosa County American Legion Honor Guard.

Memorial Day Picnic for Veterans

Following the 9 AM celebration, Veterans Memorial Park will host a lunch for veterans and their families. Free lunches will be served to the 250 veterans and family members from 11 AM - 1 PM. For more information about the Memorial Day Program, call 205-752-5773
