City Declares 6 Near-Campus Student Apartment Units Uninhabitable Over Mold
Six units at The Walk, a luxury student apartment complex steps from the University of Alabama campus, have been declared uninhabitable by a city inspector due to mold issues weeks before the fall semester begins.
A Tuscaloosa city spokesperson confirmed on Wednesday that mold remediation experts conducted air quality tests after what appeared to be mold was found inside some apartments at The Walk, a four-story student apartment complex at the corner of 12th Street and 9th Avenue, just behind the recently reconstructed Julia Tutweiler women's dorm.
"All units that are deemed uninhabitable cannot be occupied until they have been completely remediated by a professional remediation specialist and a new independent third-party air quality test is provided to the City," the city said.
The Walk, located at 899 12th Street, markets itself as the closest student housing property to UA's campus, with units situated just behind Tutwiler Hall near Sorority Row and Bryant-Denny Stadium. The complex leases by the bed and advertises fully furnished luxury units with quartz countertops and stainless steel appliances.
The fall semester at the University of Alabama begins in mid-August.
