The last Winn-Dixie grocery store in Tuscaloosa will permanently close soon, and final clearance sales are underway to offload remaining inventory.

As the Thread has reported, the once-ubiquitous store has been being phased out of the area since its parent company, Southeastern Grocers, was acquired by the German ALDI brand in 2024.

That transition saw a trio of Winn-Dixie stores in Tuscaloosa and Northport converted into ALDIs, leaving only the store on University Boulevard East in Five Points standing.

The former owners then regrouped last year, transitioning from Southeastern Grocers into the Winn-Dixie Company and buying back the brand from ALDI.

His new ownership group plans to keep some Winn-Dixie locations open in Florida and Georgia, but will close all remaining Alabama locations - just six remained in business in the Yellowhammer State this week.

Signage is up this week in Five Points, confirming the location will soon be shuttered.

Since the brand is no longer owned by ALDI, it's unknown if this location will be converted into that format, left vacant, or acquired for another use.

Clearance sales are underway at the Five Points store, with prices discounted 20-40 percent this week and further as time goes on.
